Learning about Community at our Online Secondary School

At Sophia Online High School UK, we bring the Global Goals to life through our inspiring online secondary school curriculum partnership with Fieldwork Education.

This term, our Senior students have been exploring the IMYC focus unit of Community. Central to this is developing and awareness and understanding of inequalities and how we can work together to reduce them.

Reducing inequalities and ensuring no one is left behind are integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, inequality within and among countries and within communities is a persistent cause for concern. Too much of the world’s wealth is held by a very small group of people. This often leads to financial and social discrimination.

Community: What does it mean at our online secondary school?

A shared sense of belonging occurs when people are able to negotiate and appreciate their complex, often messy, differences. This term our online secondary school students will consider overlapping ideas of ‘communities’, by looking at our global learning community at Sophia High School UK and in their local communities, and thinking about how the everyday differences can be identified and celebrated as we explore cultural heritages that lie at the root of these differences and some of the challenges throughout history that have arisen as a result and how we can avoid such conflicts in the future.

Fieldwork Education is our curriculum partner of choice for our senior students as it provides a challenging, engaging, internationally-minded, concept focused curriculum designed specifically for the unique learning needs for Key Stage 3.

Through the delivery of inspirational units, the IMYC’s UK curriculum online helps our students to ask big questions, dive deep, make meaning, connect learning and develop their minds at this crucial stage of development.
