A private school experience for pupils who need a different path.
Sophia High School is a DfE-accredited British online independent school commissioned by Local Authorities across the United Kingdom for Alternative Provision, SEND, Virtual School, Elective Home Education and Post-16 placements.
We offer a premium British online independent school experience for students aged 4–18. Sophia High School is accredited by the UK Department for Education (through the Ofsted-delivered Online Education Accreditation Scheme) and is also an accredited member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS).
Our commissioned pupils receive the same education as every other pupil on Sophia’s roll: live daily lessons in small classes, taught by fully qualified British-curriculum teachers, delivered from the same digital learning environment as the rest of our school. Not pre-recorded content. Not predominantly independent study. A real school day, with real teachers, real classmates and real interaction.
We take care of the admin and safeguarding so your caseworkers can focus on the pupil. Attendance is reported daily. EHCP oversight is provided by our SEND team. Exam entries are supported through our approved Pearson Edexcel Virtual Examination Centre. And every commissioned pupil has a dedicated personal mentor delivering weekly one-to-one support to rebuild confidence and re-engage with learning.

Quality & Accreditation
Sophia High School is accredited under the UK Department for Education’s Online Education Accreditation Scheme, and prepares students for Pearson Edexcel IGCSEs and International A-Levels.
We understand that the local authority teams responsible for pupil outcomes are diverse, and that a pupil’s route into commissioned education can come from any one of them. Sophia works alongside all of them, coordinated through a single commissioning point of contact for your authority.
Flexible full-time placements that reduce exclusions and give pupils a genuine route back into education, delivered under the school's own DfE accreditation.
Full-time accredited online schooling for pupils with EHCPs, with SEND oversight and contribution to Annual Reviews from Sophia's Director of Inclusive Learning and ALNCO.
Continuity of education for Looked After Children across placement moves, without a change of school for the young person. Same teachers, same classmates, same routine.
Structured, accredited full-time packages for deregistered pupils, offering EHE families the recognised alternative to unstructured home learning.
Rapid-start placements to re-engage learners quickly, with daily attendance reporting and pastoral support that rebuilds routine and trust.
Functional Skills at Level 2, GCSE resits, and full A-Level and BTEC pathways for post-16 pupils at risk of becoming NEET.
Pupils can remain on your school's roll while receiving their education with Sophia (dual enrolment), or transfer fully onto Sophia's roll. The right structure is agreed with the commissioner at referral.
The full English National Curriculum, delivered live every school day by fully qualified British-curriculum teachers in market-leading small classes. Not pre-recorded. Not primarily independent study.
Every commissioned pupil is assigned a personal mentor delivering weekly one-to-one support. This is often the transformational piece for pupils who have lost confidence in themselves or in education.
Sophia has a Designated Safeguarding Lead, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads across all phases, and a Board Governor for Safeguarding. All safeguarding and behaviour concerns are recorded on Sophia's secure Athena Management Information System and reported to commissioning authorities as required.
Sophia provides daily attendance reporting to commissioning Local Authorities as standard, with weekly summary reports and immediate escalation for concerns.
The Director of Inclusive Learning and Alternative Provision and the school's ALNCO provide oversight for every commissioned pupil with additional needs, contributing to Annual Reviews and working with SEND caseworkers on outcomes.
Sophia is an approved Pearson Edexcel Virtual Examination Centre for International GCSEs, International A-Levels and BTEC Nationals in Esports, with additional support for Functional Skills and GCSE resits for Post-16 pupils.
Weekly Enrichment sessions, wellbeing programme, and in-person events including trips and fixture days, so that commissioned pupils are part of a school community rather than isolated from one.
Sophia is a proven solution for:
Full-time online provision with SEND oversight, contribution to Annual Reviews, and delivery against EHCP outcomes.
A calmer, structured live-teaching environment that rebuilds trust in education and often becomes the route back to engagement.
Small classes, subject-specialist teaching and a low-stimulation online environment suited to autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent learners.
Short-term online provision that keeps a pupil engaged in learning while the longer-term placement is arranged.
Full-time Alternative Provision under Sophia's own DfE accreditation, with pastoral mentoring and rapid start.
Continuity of education across placement moves, without a change of school for the young person.
Elite athletes, performers and pupils with caring responsibilities who need a flexible schedule alongside a serious academic programme.
Sophia is included in commissioned funding arrangements through several established routes. Which one applies depends on whether the pupil has an EHCP, and on who holds the funding relationship.
Due to Sophia's DfE accreditation and annual quality assurance reviews, many Local Authorities now name Sophia in Section I of the EHCP as the pupil's setting (categorised as an "Online" or "Other" setting). Sophia works with SEND caseworkers to support the wording and the funding agreement.
Where a bespoke package under Education Otherwise Than At School is agreed, Sophia is included as part of that package alongside any additional therapies or support the pupil requires.
Small classes, subject-specialist teaching and a low-stimulation online environment suited to autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent learners.
Under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, Local Authorities may fund suitable alternative education for pupils unable to attend school due to illness, SEND, EBSA (Emotionally Based School Avoidance) or other exceptional circumstances. Sophia is regularly commissioned under Section 19 arrangements.
The pupil's current school may fund Sophia directly as an Alternative Provider to support reintegration or to provide a suitable environment while other arrangements are being made.
Sophia's admissions and commissioning teams provide all supporting documentation Local Authorities require to progress a funding request, including curriculum overviews, safeguarding assurance, attendance reporting protocols, and confirmation of DfE accreditation.
Sophia’s commissioned rate is set at a highly competitive annual figure per pupil, reflecting the seriousness of the provision and the reality of Local Authority budget constraints. Sophia does not treat commissioned pupils as a lower-cost, lower-standard tier of the school; the rate reflects our commitment to the sustainability of the partnership and the scale of provision we now offer to Local Authorities across the UK.
We are pleased to discuss commissioning rates, dual enrolment structures, cohort placements, and framework arrangements directly with commissioning officers.

Yes. Sophia High School is a British online independent school for students aged 4–18, accredited by the UK Department for Education (through the Ofsted-delivered Online Education Accreditation Scheme) and an accredited member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA) and the Council of British International Schools (COBIS). Sophia’s DfE URN is 149905 and UKRLP reference is 10087150. We work with a significant number of Local Authorities across the United Kingdom.
Every strand of statutory provision: pupils permanently excluded and requiring Alternative Provision; pupils with EHCPs; Looked After Children through Virtual Schools; pupils on Elective Home Education pathways; Children Missing Education and pupils with attendance concerns; and Post-16 pupils at risk of becoming NEET.
Sophia delivers live daily teaching in small classes by fully qualified British-curriculum teachers. Not pre-recorded content. Not predominantly independent study. Pupils attend a real school day with real teachers, real classmates and real interaction, which is what enables re-engagement of pupils who have disengaged from mainstream education.
Both. Sophia supports dual enrolment (pupil remains on the home school roll while receiving education with Sophia) and full transfer onto Sophia’s roll. The right structure is agreed with the commissioning officer at referral.
Sophia is an approved Pearson Edexcel Virtual Examination Centre offering International GCSEs, International A-Levels and BTEC Nationals in Esports, and delivers Functional Skills alongside GCSE resits for Post-16 pupils. Examinations can be sat under remote invigilation or at approved centres.
Safeguarding at Sophia is fully aligned with Keeping Children Safe in Education. We have a Designated Safeguarding Lead, Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads across all phases, and a Board Governor for Safeguarding. All concerns are recorded on Sophia’s secure Athena MIS, attendance is reported daily to commissioning Local Authorities as standard, and we work with Local Authority safeguarding teams as a full partner.
Yes. Our Director of Inclusive Learning and Alternative Provision, together with the school’s ALNCO, provides full oversight of pupils with EHCPs, contributes to Annual Reviews, and works with SEND caseworkers on outcomes.
Sophia offers rapid-start placements for pupils who need to re-engage with education without delay. We can typically begin a placement within one to two weeks of referral where the paperwork allows. For urgent Alternative Provision or Children Missing Education referrals, we prioritise the admissions process to ensure the pupil is in a live classroom quickly.
For pupils with an EHCP: direct LA funding with Sophia named in Section I; direct LA funding through an EOTAS package; or dual enrolment funded by the current school or LA. For pupils without an EHCP: Section 19 funding through the Local Authority for pupils unable to attend school due to illness, SEND or EBSA; or dual enrolment funded by the current school. Sophia’s team provides all supporting documentation Local Authorities require to progress a funding request.
Funding requests are made to the family’s Local Authority SEN team, or to the Headteacher of the pupil’s current school. The typical process involves raising Sophia as the preferred provider at an EHCP Annual Review or through an EOTAS request, agreeing the placement with the LA or school, obtaining a Service Provider Purchase Order number, and confirming the official start date on receipt of the funding agreement. Sophia’s admissions team supports families through this process.
