A school built
around training and match days

Your child is trying to become a professional footballer, and that takes hours, travel and everything they have. Sophia High School is built for exactly that. We design the timetable around the training programme rather than against it, and every lesson is live, small and recorded.

The odds

What happens to most academy players

Every academy parent knows the odds are long. Very few see them written down.

4%

of elite academy players aged 13 to 18 reached top-tier professional football. Another 6% reached the lower leagues.

Source: University of Essex, 2024.

72%

of released players said their club did not give them enough support.

Source: ITV News survey, 2021.

88%

of them reported depression or anxiety since being released.

Source: ITV News survey,2021.

Your child may be the one who signs. The education is the part of this you control, and it is the part that works in both outcomes. A player who signs still has to read a contract, manage money and build something that outlives the playing. A player who is released, at 16 or at 18, needs somewhere to go on the Monday.

The question is not whether your child trains. It is whether the education is ready on the day it is needed. Year 10 and Year 11 do not come round again.

High performance

The same standard on the pitch and in the classroom

An academy measures a player every week. Data, video, feedback, a plan for the next seven days. Nothing is left to an opinion at the end of the year. Sophia High School works the same way. A core class has six to eight students. The teacher sees every student’s work live, in the lesson, and corrects it there. Attendance is checked daily. You get a meeting with the school every week or two weeks. High performance in sport and high performance in school are the same habit. Your child does not drop one to hold the other.

The day

How a training day fits a school day

This is an example, not a fixed timetable. We build the timetable around the training programme your academy sets. The school day sits inside 8am to 4pm UK time.

Travel

Tournaments, trials and travel

Every lesson is recorded

A student who misses a lesson watches it and picks the work up in their digital notebook.

Work travels with them

Work is set at the end of every lesson, and the teacher can see it and respond to it live, wherever the student is.

The pastoral side does not pause

A weekly 15-minute mentor meeting stays in place while the player is away.

A trial abroad costs your child a week of lessons, not a term of progress.

Representing my country requires total focus. The teachers at Sophia help me manage my workload so I can focus on the match and catch up on academics immediately after without any stress.

Subjects

Six or seven IGCSEs, not ten

Every student takes English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Double or Triple Award Science and one subject of their choice.

A smaller number of subjects produces better grades and lets the independent work finish inside the school day. A player who trains twice a day cannot carry ten subjects and a training programme at the same time. Nothing is dropped in quality. Fewer things are carried.

Sophia365

Sophia365, our Friday programme for athletes

Friday at Sophia High School is Enrichment. For our elite athletes it is also Sophia365, where they meet as a group.

Life skills

Mental health, financial literacy, the practical side of an early career.

Personal development

Motivation, goal setting, confidence and handling pressure.

Career transition

What comes after the playing, planned while the playing is still going.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Part of the programme, not an add-on.

Sessions are grouped by phase: from under-13, then under-15 and under-16, then under-17 and under-18 — the age at which players are already turning professional.

Two things this does. It puts your child with other young athletes who understand the week they are having. And it prepares the transition every player makes in the end, at 18 or at 34.

Pathways

Where these qualifications take your child

The United States

Five IGCSE passes and two A-Levels meet NCAA academic eligibility. A-Levels also carry advanced standing at many US universities. A scholarship route stays open.

The United Kingdom and Europe

British qualifications are read directly by clubs, colleges and universities. No conversion, no translation of grades.

Inside the game

Sports science, physiotherapy, performance analysis, coaching, agency, media, club management. A career in football is not only playing in it.

Academies

For academies and clubs

We work with academies directly. We can teach one player or a full age group, in your training block, with attendance and progress reported to the club as well as to the parent.

FAQs

Questions academy parents ask

Yes. That is what the amended timetable is for. Tell us the training programme and we build the school week around it.

Nothing changes at school. The year group, the teachers and the exam entries stay the same. This is the reason most families come to us.

The school moves with you. We check the new time zone and adjust the timetable. See our page for international families.
Yes, through the Pearson Edexcel Remote Invigilation Service, for an additional cost, or at a Pearson exam centre.
Yes. Ask us about a squad arrangement.
No. We assess on entry and build a personal plan. Classes of six to eight make catching up possible.

Next Step

Send us the training schedule

Tell us the training days, the times and your child’s year group. We will come back with the timetable we would build around them.
