Where students live

Where our students
come from

Sophia High School has no catchment area, and no country is off the list by default. Students join from wherever their family happens to be, as long as our school day works with their local clock.

The school day runs from 8am to 4pm UK time. Lessons are 40 to 45 minutes, with breaks and independent learning in between. We check your local time against the timetable during the application, not after it — so you have the answer before you commit to anything.

More than forty countries have been represented at the school since it opened. If yours is not on the list above, that is not a no — tell us where you are and we will give you an answer.

Exams

Where your child sits exams

At home

Students can sit IGCSE and International A-Level exams at home through the Pearson Edexcel Remote Invigilation Service. Sophia High School was selected for this service. There is an additional examination cost.

At a centre

Students can also sit exams at a Pearson exam centre in their own country.
IGCSE sittings are in May/June and November. International A-Level sittings are in January and May/June.

A day in two time zones

What this looks like for a family that moves

Some of our families do not have one address. A parent works remotely, the family spends a season in Portugal and the next one in Dubai, and the school year has to survive both.

Here is how that works in practice. Lessons run to UK time wherever the family is, so a move shifts the child’s start time and nothing else. Every lesson is recorded, which covers the travel days at either end. The form group, the teachers and the class are the same people in March as they were in September. When the family lands somewhere new, they tell us the time zone and we check the timetable against it — that is the whole process.

No re-application, no waiting list, no entrance test, and no change of curriculum halfway through an exam year.

“Our child started at Sophia High School in September 2025 in Year 12 and we have been very impressed with the school and how everything works. Our child is very well supported by the academic and pastoral staff and has really enjoyed the enrichment activities held on Fridays. The academic tutors are very flexible to needs and our child has thrived this year. I would heartily recommend Sophia High School.”

English

Students who are still learning English

All lessons are taught in English. Your child does not need perfect English on the first day.

We run English support lessons with a specialist teacher for students who need them. It is a short period of support so the student can join the full programme with confidence. Classes of six to eight make this work: the teacher hears every student in every lesson.

School life

How students meet each other

Form group

Every student meets their form teacher daily for Holistic Horizons, 15 to 20 minutes. Thursday is the whole-school assembly.

Socialisation classrooms

Supervised online rooms where students meet outside lessons.

Friday

The curriculum runs Monday to Thursday. Friday is Enrichment, House activities and competitions. Options change every term and have included DJ-ing, App Development, British Sign Language, Debate Club and Photography.

Mentor

Every secondary student meets a mentor for 15 minutes each week.

Families in the same city often meet in person.

Joining

How a family joins from abroad

Parents do not need to teach. The school teaches.

1. Enquiry and call

First units sat once taught. Grades banked.

2. Induction

Before the first day we run induction sessions, including a Google Bootcamp, so your child can open their classroom and notebooks without help.

3. First day

A tech team is available through the school day if anything does not work.

4. After that

A parent dashboard with timetables and events, and a meeting with the school every week or two weeks.
